Laptop on docking station lid closed

Is it possible to have to power scheme to work at the same time.

 

1 for when the laptop is in a docking station and the lid is closed = laptop does not lock.

 

and

 

1 for when the laptop is NOT in the docking station and the lid is closed = laptop locks.

 

 

I guess a script of some kind that can tell when the laptop has a dual screen= user will close the lid on the laptop to work on the external screen, so the laptop should not lock.

and when the user takes the laptop home, the laptop should lock when the lid is closed.

 

 

Any idears?

If you assume it's powered when docked and not when not docked, then that's easy enough, not sure otherwise

thats true, but if they power it up at home, then it will not lock.

 

A unlocked stolen Laptop, even tough they work through VPN, is still gonna be a disaster.

Set an idle time limit of x minutes.

 

Not more of a disaster than someone reusing a password on another website because they don't have OAuth which gets hacked, and then reading all their emails

I think this might be somewhere that solution is procedure rather than technological. What happens if they leave the laptop on the docking station unlocked and then it's stolen? I also think that if you have a complicated algorithm (I know it's not really complicated, but .....users) quite a few won't understand that it's supposed to behave differently in different circumstances and will either use it in a way the defeats the purpose of what you're trying to achieve or complain or both.

 

I'd set a short time out on screen lock and also sell the benefit of dual screen when they're using the docking station.

 

Remind them that they'd be breaking the AUP of they leave their laptop without locking it.
