SteveHeart Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Hi, Have a very old server (Dell PowerEdge T620) that has come up with a problem. When looking at the hard drives, 2 of them seem fine, but 2 are flashing green then orange lights and the machine will not boot. I've gone through the BIOS to the controller setup and it is listing all four disks. The ones with the normal lights are showing online as expected. The other two are showing as (Foreign) Online and the other is (Foreign) Rebuild Pending. I then have the option to import Foreign Configuration or Clear Foreign Configuration. Overall the Virtual disk is showing as degraded. Any ideas on how I can try and at least get the machine to boot again?
djm968 Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Green and Orange flashing LEDs on the drives usually indicates that they are on their way out and about to fail? Was the server running when you first noticed this?
SteveHeart Posted February 25, 2020 Author Posted February 25, 2020 Haven't been on the site for a week or so. Seems it went down last night. I've imported the foreign configuration and the machine is back up and running with one of the disks currently rebuilding. This is a server about to be removed as we are going serverless in this school. All of the data has been moved to the cloud, all that was left running was DHCP and DNS which were due to be done shortly. Looks like I'm going to have to move this project along a bit faster!
mavhc Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Foreign means it thinks it's from another raid array on a different server. Maybe the raid battery has failed and it's forgotten its own configuration?
