School Census Job Description + PS

Hall all, I was wondering if there are any job descriptions available for someone who leads on various Statutory data collections like School Census and various and data quality with schools MIS's

 

It would be helpful if you could specify the going rate for such a post.

I did all of that (and more!) with the job title "Data Manager". I know in some schools, perhaps more so in the primary sector, the bursar or school business manager might. I've seen the role MIS Manager/Assistant and even Director for this sort of job. Salaries vary enormously but so do the size and breadth of of the schools/MATs. For me, certainly in secondary upwards, Data Manager is a realistic job title. Search the job forums for "Data Manager" to see the sort of offers. Generally I would say £25k up to £45k covers the vast majority.

It sounds like the perfect job for me! I don't think the commute would work though! When you say 'local authority role', do you mean working for the LA and liaising with all the LA schools/academies? How many staff reporting in to this role - that would influence salary in my view. Would the role include any data analytics on the submissions or just the collection?

The role would be working for the Local authority dealing with 107 schools. I just need a suitable job description and personal spec as I've heard from many authorities who pay different rates for the same role.

Tricky - you might want to reach out to other LA's and see if they would share JDs. For my area, Surrey, it would be Strictly Education (formerly Babcock 4S). Unfortunately the job is expired so I couldn't get to a detailed JD.

It might be Statutory Returns Officer or something similar. But unlike data managers returning for one school, you are returning for many more schools! LA maintained schools don't always upload to COLLECT either, the LA Returns Officer carries that out along with checking the Duplicate Pupil Report.

 

MATs might have something similar returning data for their own umbrella of institutions.

 

I'd probably start with something like this:

 

- Prepare guidance notes for the completion of each census period with new changes from the previous round

- Train Returns Officers at LA schools in the completion of the school census

- Collect Census returns from schools

- Check census data is accurate, including running of the Duplicate Pupil Report, and raise cases with schools where data appears unusual or incomplete

- Upload school census to COLLECT

- Provide support to LA schools in census related cases

 

This is based on my experiences working in Sutton as the company that provided census support was also the same as the one that provided SIMS support. You will need good knowledge of how the census workflow is carried out in your LA's most popular MIS at minimum and be able to arrange training and technical support for when things go wrong or just plain awkward for the data managers in schools (believe me, the census throws up some very strange queries and complicated scenarios!).
