After seeing a report on the BBC this morning about exclusion rates https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-48172917 , I thought I'd run a quick analysis this morning to see if our data matches the trend over the past few years. Unfortunately when I go to export the ethnicity of off-roll students in a report, the field is blank. Any idea why Capita are doing this?

Schools were directed not to collect ethnicity data a couple of years ago.

It was a waste of time anyway as half of parents didn’t/wouldn’t supply the information

Incorrect I'm afraid! That refers to a pupil's nationality (American, French, Russian, etc). Ethnicity is completely different (White British, Black Carribbean, etc) and a required item on the census.

The Ethnicity field in the SIMS reporting dictionary only shows you the current ethnicity group membership or a student. When a student leaves their ethnicity group membership gets terminated as of their date of leaving. To view ethnicity for leavers you need the "Group membership (Historical)" sub report "Description" data item, filtered down to Group type of the group is Ethnicity

It's been this way as long as I've used SIMS - Esteban's workaround will do the trick.

The Ethnicity field in the SIMS reporting dictionary only shows you the current ethnicity group membership or a student. When a student leaves their ethnicity group membership gets terminated as of their date of leaving. To view ethnicity for leavers you need the "Group membership (Historical)" sub report "Description" data item, filtered down to Group type of the group is Ethnicity[ATTACH=CONFIG]53284[/ATTACH]

 

That worked. Thank you! I'll make good use of this subreport.

One thing to note, this sub report will return all historical ethnicity, so if a student's ethnicity was changed (e.g. parent changed their mind) then you'll get multiple rows for a student. To get round this put a sort order in so it shows the most recent first then select the option to display the first record only.
