Mac shared windows drives always ask for credentials

I have a few Macs that connect to a windows share drive. Generally, this is working ok, except that I want it to auto connect transparently when the user logs in. However, despite entering the remote user password and specifying to store in the keychain, this always asks for credentials when a user logs in.

Interestingly, if I go the "go" menu and "connect to server", it has the details pre-filled in from when I initially configured and I can just press "connect" and it will do so, plus put the icon on the desktop without asking for credentials.

I am unsure why I can get these drives to connect and map the manual way, but it asks for credentials when I try to make it happen via login (configured in "Login Items") via "Users and Groups".

Hi, we're using 10.11 so not as high up as the two you noted. Despite following the article, it didn't work, but maybe this is version related?

I just find it most annoying that I can go the previous connections and connect (with stored connections), but that this process as-is doesn't work for login. I'd sooner not be giving students the actual password to the share (not that it would be a disaster, but i'd sooner avoid that if possible).
