Have Capita removed the Emergency Contact Button from the toolbar in SIMS?

We are trying to set this up however it seems to be missing in our SIMS system.

I do remember seeing it years and years ago but not sure when it stopped appearing.

Could it be a permissions thing too if Capita haven't removed it? Any ideas on where the correct permission setting is.

We have ticked the box that says Use Emergency Alert and configured the selected staff already and tried logging out and logging back in but the toolbar icon is still not showing.

For a user to see the Emergency Alert button on their Home page they will need the following in SIMS.net:

  • A timetable
  • Be part of the Class Teacher or Registration Tutor Group
  • Have a group supervisor role.

For example:

Staff member A. Pinkney has system manager access of Registration Tutor but will not see the emergency icon if he is not assigned to be a registration tutor in Pastoral Structure. By doing this he then has a group supervisor role. If assigning him to be a registration tutor is not appropriate in order to see the Emergency Icon changing his access group permissions to Class Teacher access in System Manager, as he has a timetable, he then has a group supervisor role as the class groups for his timetable.

AH! That might be where the problem is - off to go find a user with a timetable.

I think we've pretty much ruled out this isn't going to work as there are only about 5 members of staff who actually meet that requirement.

Looks like im going to have to look at something else.

What are you trying to achieve?

Capita put those conditions in so that the system knows exactly who is sending a message and from where so the user doesn't have to enter any additional details in an emergency as usually they don't have time to open another program and type things.

Someone has come up with the bright idea of "let's see if SIMS has the ability to quickly notify specific users the x member of staff needs help".

To me there are so many things that can go wrong here -

1. we are relaying on the sender to have SIMS open at that point in time.

2. we are relaying on the receiver's to have SIMS open at that point in time.

3. All staff would have to meet all the criteria above which isn't possible.

My thoughts now on a different thread were to create an EXE which would popup a message on selected user's computers stating "x staff member needs urgent help - message from x machine". Apparently we are already do this by staff emailing a specific distribution list. I honestly think we are trying to find another way for staff members to contact those that can help.

The only way this is going to work is if everyone has a radio for these urgent requirements.

We use SIMS Emergency Alert for our on-call system, combined with radios. All SLT, Pastoral and Admin staff are configured to receive the alerts and with use of an On-Call rota, issues are quickly picked up.

SIMS is like oxygen here, nobody ever exists without it. Once staff log in, SIMS is usually opened first and will remain so for the rest of the day for ease, plus the requirement of the on-call policy means they rarely close it down. We have enough staff configured to receive the alert that it's never missed. If staff keeping SIMS open is an issue then that's something to be tackled from the top down.
