Bit of an odd problem here, we upgraded our smoothwall from an utm3000 to and s10, and migrated the settings over to the s10. All good and working nicely! Now at the point of migration the old smoothwall (based on a dell server) was simply shut down and disconnected. I powered it back up (offline!) today as I wanted to login to check a couple of settings before I wiped the drives and re-used the server. This is where it gets odd - plugging a laptop directly into the old utm and configuring an ip on the same address range should let me access the web interface, but it doesn't. I can't even ping the address, nor any of the other addresses used on the other ports (i.e external, byod etc)I've disabled proxies and the laptop is configured correctly on the same address range, and the laptop works fine with other connections, so is there some reason my old smoothwall is now blocking connections, I know its expired but I'm only trying to connect locally before I wipe the serverI've setup plenty of utm's before and this method has always worked, would the expired license block all connections by any chance? Apart from configuring the laptop to use the same ip range/subnet theres not a lot else to do.

Have you switched WiFi off on the laptop? Depending on configuration if it realises there is no internet access via wired it just shuts it off and tries to direct all traffic out via the WiFI.

The other thing you could do is install Wireshark on the laptop and see what IP address the smoothwall is chatting on, that may get you a bit closer.

Failing this you can log into the smoothwall via keyboard/video/mouse and type in "ip addr" and "ifconfig" to verify the IP address settings it actually has.

Yup wifi definitely off, and only connecting to the internal smoothwall port. I have tried the other internal ports (used for a cashless system/wifi etc) but still the sameI've logged into the smoothwall and run setup to check the ip addresses and allow admin access on all local ports, but still nothing - it even blocks ping which I didn't configure on the firewall when it was a 'live' unit.

Are you absolutely sure laptop has correct IP settings etc?

Can you post an ipconfig /all output from laptop and perhaps do an "ifconfig" on the smoothwall and show the output?

The fact it isn't responding to ping suggests something is fundamentally wrong (this is normally allowed regardless), also, presumably you have rebooted the smoothwall after configuring the settings?

This is why I’m baffled, I’ve got someone else to check the setting to make sure I’m not going mad, and I see each ping hitting the smoothwall network interface as the leds blink in sequence, but it times out. And trying to ping the laptop from the smoothwall also fails, which implies something is going on with the smoothie interface
