tj2419 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 We migrated our DHCP server from an old server to a new one when we decomissioned our admin network and now just have a single domain and network. DHCP is working fine with our wired clients. It has broken our wireless network. Ruckus Zone Director 3000 and APs ZF7363 You try connect to the wireless and it wont let you connect, it fails to assign an IP address. The APs keep restarting as they are failing to get the heartbeat from the ZoneDirector. The wireless network worked fine until the DHCP was migrated then it is playing up. We have even restored the zone director to factory settings but still having the same issue. Anyone any ideas? Thanks
ITGuyWestMidlands Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Has the IP address of the DHCP server changed?
tj2419 Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 Has the IP address of the DHCP server changed?Yes it has but we are a flat network currently so didn't think we'd need to update anything like ip-helpers. Is there somewhere else we may need to update?
ITGuyWestMidlands Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 There may be something the zone director where you need to add in the IP of authorised DHCP server s
tj2419 Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 Yeah, had a look but can't see anything and the APs themselves are getting IPs from our DHCP just not clients.
timbo343 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Just had a look at our ZD and i dont remember settng anything to do with our DHCP. Has the ZD got a static IP address? Try factory resetting the APs too. They should pick up an IP from the server. They are rebooting as they cannot contact the the ZD. Try setting a static IP on the AP if you can get into the management of the AP. Try connecting the AP into a network port that a working wired computer works on if you have a flat network.
LytchettNM Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Not knowing the ZD product but this sounds like the ZD does a DHCP relay to the IP address that the DHCP was on, can you temporarily change the IP address of your DHCP server back to what it was before just to check that if the DHCP service is back on that IP the wireless works again? Or maybe setup a secondary DHCP server on the old address.

Yes the ZD has a static IP same as what it was previously. We've tried resetting the APs and ZD. Now we've done this the APs seem to stay connected to the ZD and have IPs from our DHCP but still not dishing out IPs from our DHCP to the clients connecting to them.
timbo343 Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 I guess there is nothing configured on the ZD for clients to connect to a specific VLAN. Im trying to think of all the possible issues and im scraping the bottom of the barrell. It should just give out the addresses. Have you tried giving a client machine a spare static IP and see if it can ping the DHCP server, contact the network and get out to the net?
tj2419 Posted September 7, 2018 Author Posted September 7, 2018 I spoke too soon, the AP's after being connected for about 18 hours have started disconnecting again. Lost heartbeat
timbo343 Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 When they come back online give them or at least one a static IP address via the ZD so they aren't relying on the DHCP server.
tj2419 Posted September 11, 2018 Author Posted September 11, 2018 Apologies for the delay in reply. We have tried plugging an AP straight into the ZD ethernet port to cut out the switches etc. We still get dropped packets when pinging the APs, which leads me to think its an AP hardware / firmware issue.
timbo343 Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Did you say this occurs on all the APs rather than just one? What version of the software are you running on your Zone Director? I'd be surprised if all the APs have the same issue though.

Last 24 hours they all stayed up then 4pm today about 6 lost their connection again then came back after about 15 mins. I had a ping running to one of the APs all day fine then around 4pm started losing packets even though that AP wasn't down according to ZD. Ping a computer or server they are fine. Looks like whenever it goes wrong all APs are dropping packets then all goes fine for another 24 hours. Seems to happen each afternoon between 13-16:00 some point in this window. The ZD and APs are on firmware 9.12.2.0 build 219
tj2419 Posted September 14, 2018 Author Posted September 14, 2018 Might be getting closer just found a forum on ruckus support which seems to have our same issue https://forums.ruckuswireless.com/ruckuswireless/topics/access-points-dropping-suddenly Basically a driver could be sending out loads of broadcast traffic across the network overloading the APs. We use the same driver as detailed in the forum. Now i just need to figure out how to disable IPv6 across all our computers.
