Azure Backup Folder Permissions

Our current cloud backup is ££££ so I’m looking at Azure, all looked good during the test, create a vault on the portal, install the MARS agent on a server, setup a backup job......but it does not offer to backup/restore folder permissions.

 

I don’t understand, what is the Azure method of backing up files and folders and their ntfs permission?

I’ve only kicked the tyres of azure backup (felt very ‘beta’ to me), but permissions are just attributes of the file so backed up (and restored) with it.

yes the permissions are backed up but the copy/paste restore process means it will be assigned the permissions of the destination folder.

 

I suppose there is an xcopy with permissions scripting option but that's a bit crap eh?

 

what cloud backup solution do you use?

Yep, if you’re not restoring the whole volume that’s true, but IME is true of any software

 

I inherited acronis and looked at switching to azure backup as I assumed it would be cheaper, but there wasn’t much in it and the acronis is a much more polished solution. I actually now also use it for my personal PCs

 

Acronis just backs up the pc that runs sims (it also dumps the sql to a file, backs under to the cloud and does a complete image to the fileserver), the rest of our backup is a bit dogs breakfast driven by cost, but it is tested every term.. we have two servers that essentially the same and have dfs-r with file history. One server backs up to the other one.

 

I use goodsync to upload all files to a specific onedrive account for offsite. I also have a little script that runs disk2vhd to create a VHD of one server, chunks it into several zip files then uploads to one drive

 

The full on DR approach is basically buy a chunky pc, install windows server, onedrive with the backup account and from there the whole environment can be restored as VMs.
