Ofcom releases more 5ghz spectrum

I read in Aerohive communities that

 

“So recently ofcom opened up channels 149 - 165“

 

But can’t find confirmation of that on Ofcom’s site...although they proposed this some time ago...with a goal of getting up to six 80Mhz channels.

 

I think that band was normally reserved for licences point to point links....

 

Anyone able to confirm this? Anyone have UK access points which have been updated to allow this?

I don’t believe this to the case.

Ofcom drag their feet over everything especially if there’s no license income to be gained from it.

 

Some of the responses from Aerospace and Ham Radio enthusiasts seem to be negative and others are insisting on limitations of 40Mhz channel use.

 

DFS defence continues to be an issue, I have 90 Unifi APs in the Heathrow flightpath and these regularly detect Radar Interference and suddenly switch channels.

 

So, I don’t think they have actually made any decision as yet but if they do will it not require approval from CEPT/FCC?

 

Apparently not as BREXIT may provide a solution...

 

Consultation on Ofcom’s plans closes in July. Global harmonisation across the 5GHz band will not happen before 2020 at the earliest, following discussion at WRC-19. But the good news for Brexit supporters is that the UK can go ahead and open up the 5725-5850MHz band – without waiting for its European neighbours to collectively decide to do the same – as there is no legally binding EC Decision that restricts the UK from doing so.

 

Who really cares anyway, VM and BT will just ship dodgy routers configured for 160mhz channels as default and increase the noise floor by 40db as default just to meet silly advertising claims.

 

You don’t really expect them to adhere to international regulations do you?
