Updating from 1607 to 1709 via WSUS

Afternoon all,

 

Have many of you successfully managed to upgrade to 1709 Fall (Education) from 1607 (Education) and earlier via WSUS, without it reinstalling all of the previously stripped Windows Packages? I ran a test on one of our testbed machines and it appeared to install all the useless gumf back onto what was a stripped out image. Is this the norm?

I think if you upgrade from 1703 to a newer version, it doesn't install all the rubbish again if you have removed it. Not much help as you are on 1607 though.

Yes. Ideally you need to use SCCM/MDT Task Sequence to get the level of control you want. You could write a powershell script to remove the apps before anyone logs on timing it will be the hard bit.

 

You may be better with a powershell script ran from a Scheduled Task you can run scripts as a post install command from Windows Setup. But you won't get any reporting.

That's basically what we've been doing - a complete reimage and tbh, it's probably quicker doing it like this than waiting for the huge feature updates to install and restart 4 times over.

Yeah, I sat and watched one on Monday. Once I'd sorted its complaints about Sophos, it took two and a half hours to do its thing. I know that in theory a user could have continued working, but the hard drive was being hammered the while time and the NIC want doing much better.

 

I'd already decided what I was going to do, but when I saw that all the crud had magically reappeared [emoji35]

 

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I still can't believe how ridiculous some of Microsoft's decisions are.

I got soooo close: I have GSuite enabled, accounts with SSO for all staff, pupils and governors, team drives in use, file stream tested and working, first Chromebooks deployed, but......
