Which Rackmount Monitor\Keyboard??

Hi all,

 

First of all a thanks for whoever came up with the idea for this place. I know that I'm on the other side of the world to most of you but a lot of the problems seem the same. As long as I'm tinkering with computers I'll keep coming back here.

 

My dilemma is this. I am running out of space in my server cabinet and need to get rid of the standard LCD monitor and put in a sliding LCD Monitor/keyboard. This will give me a lot more space and make it easier to work directly on the servers. Problem is which one to get. The local supplier claims that the only unit he can get that will work with the Windows servers we run is over au$1500. Apparently if we were running Sun Servers then he could get one for under au$500. Does this sound right or complete BS.

 

What brands / makes are you running in your racks??

that's complete bs about a tft drawer for sun servers. First of all, Sun servers aren't normally configured from the gui so you only need as a minimum a console connection for the cli. And that's only when you can't get an ssh connection.

 

Secondly you're tft drawer should connect to you're kvm switch which should have the right cables for hooking up old and new sun servers and x86 boxes. So forget this nonsense about a sun specific tft drawer.

 

How much is $1500 btw ? If that works out to a few hundred quid that is suspiciously cheap. Good tft drawers range anywhere from 600-1500 pounds sterling. They're expensive but they're great as a space saving solution. As an idea APC do a 15inch screen model toward the bottom of that price range whereas HP's tft drawers are toward the top end.

 

Bear in mind even if you can afford FN-GM's Dell suggestion it uses a trackball. Caveat Emptor!!!

I agree with torledo that the standard sliding LCD Monitor/keyboard options come with standard SVGA and PS2 or USB inputs which should hook directly into your KVM.

 

There may be some models with slightly different connections meant for the older sun gear that ran a different type of monitor connection but there are adapters avalible anyway that can convert those to SVGA.

In that case aus$1500 that threadstarter was quoted is a very fair and realistic price from my experience. What brand of kvm is being quoted ? Might be able to give you an idea of whether it's one of the trusted names in this space.

Thanks for the tips. Not sure as to which brand he was talking about and won't find out for a week or so as we are closed for business for a week (got to love holidays!!).

 

I have a feeling that he can get a HP one for a bit over the $1500 mark without a KVM which is fine because I have a good rackmount KVM that wil otherwise become useless. Will wait and see.
