enjay Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 We have an issue (which I suspect has been underlying for a long time) where certain GPOs don't apply properly at login, causing students to miss mapped drives, printers, redirected desktop, redirected Start Menu, etc. This happens perhaps one or two logons per day. We have checked event viewer (PC and server) and checked and ruled out specific PCs, specific usernames, permissions, OU membership, corrupt or conflicting GPOs, network performance and PC performance. The only possible link we've found is it does seem to happen more often on PCs which have recently been woken from sleep mode, but even then the vast majority of recently-woken PCs are fine. Our support company are saying "it's a Windows problem" and "that happens", but my Leadership aren't accepting that as the final resolution. Any ideas or suggestions?
GreyArc-Marc Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Hi There, Two things come to mind - this could be the gpo “slow link detection” kicking in and not applying GPO because it believes that the client is on a slow link. Second, if you manage to get onto an affected device, run gpresult /h c:\temp\result.html The result might yield why policies are not getting applied. You might need to change the directory of the output if you have writing to the C drive locked down, maybe write it to the users home drive? Marc

free780 Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 Are they waking from a Scheduled Task or WOL? If scheduled task you could include a reboot at 5/6am.
enjay Posted January 23, 2018 Author Posted January 23, 2018 Thanks everyone, to answer all the questions in one post: We suspected slow network detection, so have disabled that a while ago. We have also enabled wait for network connection when logging in. All wired. As for waking up, the problem happens at all times of day, but does seem to be worst when the PCs have been sleeping over lunch or a free period. They reboot twice a week on a schedule; worth booting them more frequently to keep them faster?
