bald_pig Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 We got rid of the teaching drive and installed gdfs on all staff machines.

fiza Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 We got rid of the teaching drive and installed gdfs on all staff machines. How does the gdfs work? If items are in MS format do they automatically open MS Office? If they are in Google format do they open in the corresponding G Suite App?

Yep, if it was a google sheet document it would then open up a chrome tab ready for you to mess with said document on sheets.
mavhc Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 (edited) Oddly non Google Docs files work better in FileStream. Basically instead of syncing everything it waits until you want to access it before streaming it as it loads, thus you don't fill up every SSD with GBs of shared files Known issues You can't currently duplicate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. If you have edit access for a Team Drive (or any files shared within a Team Drive), you can currently only view these files in Drive File Stream. To edit the files, you must access them in Drive on the web. That's Edit rather than Full. Team drives should be as small as possible, all files in a drive have the same permissions. Is gdfs per computer or per user? If I install it for a staff member and then a student logs in does the student get access to gdfs too?
mavhc Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 It's installed per computer, but runs per user
fiza Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 It's installed per computer, but runs per user So I can stop students from having it but allow it for staff on the same machines?
bald_pig Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 So I can stop students from having it but allow it for staff on the same machines? If you have a system in place to restrict programs from running for students, then yes. Each user has to log on, so students won't be logged in as the teacher.
fiza Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 If you have a system in place to restrict programs from running for students, then yes. Is this not something that can be restricted using the G Suite Admin console? Each user has to log on, so students won't be logged in as the teacher. Yes I meant to not have it available to students not that students would see Teacher documents on Google.

Yes I meant to not have it available to students not that students would see Teacher documents on Google. You can disable drive for students, I don't think you can stop the program from running though.
