Until now — and probably for a while in most heads — the GNU/Linux system at school has been perceived as a good replacement of other proprietary servers. However the server is probably the least important things in term of freedom in a school network. It doesn't allow a teacher to share a workstation software with students. Supporting GNU/Linux in the workstation side can grant higher freedom and liberty between users in a school.. Therefore, OFSET has setup Freeduc, a tool to help to list, to evaluate and to package only free — non GPL exclusive - edu soft.

LliureX is an Edubuntu-based live DVD developed by the Council of Culture, Education and Sport at the Municipality of Valencia in Spain, designed for deployment in schools throughout the region. A new version, based on Edubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn", was announced yesterday. New features include: full support for Valencian and Spanish, with additional language modules for other regional languages of Spain, as well as English, French, German, Arabic, Russian and Romanian; improved hardware support and up-to-date software with two years of guaranteed security updates; GNOME 2.18 desktop, OpenOffice.org 2.2 office suite, Firefox 2.0 web browser and Linux kernel 2.6.20; new and more robust system of auto-configuration with a transparent installation of configuration files. Linguas OS is a Linux operating system adapted for translators. Linguas OS was initiated by Anthony Baldwin. , Linguas OS was created for two purposes:

1) to demonstrate to professionals in the translation industry that they need not be enslaved to propietary software vendors, rather, that they can use FOSS (Free Open Source Software) alternatives, and;

2) For translators already usingLinux and FOSS tools, Linguas OS is a prefab distro solution.

Linux as a server for schools

 

As a file server for schools, Linux is ready now. It can act as a native Appletalk, SMB, NFS, or NetWare server. Files stored on a Linux system can be simultaneously available for users of all four of those networking systems (and more, although those are by far the most common in schools). Linux also enjoys an advantage in price here over the alternatives, since its legendary efficiency and low cost mean that computers considered obsolescent under other operating systems can be put back into service as functional Linux servers.

 

When it comes to providing Internet services, Linux again easily beats the more commonly used scholastic systems. Setting up Linux systems to provide email accounts, an NNTP news server, a Web server, file and print services, and firewalling, proxy, and IP masquerading is fairly easy, and certainly rewards the effort. Given that Linux is free, and can run well on older hardware, there is no reason why numerous severs couldn't be set up. For many high schools, creating these systems could be part of the learning experience itself. The benefits could be felt in many areas, including mailing lists for staff and student organizations, for instance.

Administrative software

 

What about the systems that students, teachers, and staff actually work with directly? These systems have mostly been Macintosh and more recently Microsoft Windows machines. How does Linux fare in that niche?

 

Unfortunately, not too well at the moment. There are a number of projects working on addressing deficiencies in application software for Linux, but few of them have software currently ready for wide-spread deployment. However, work is progressing rapidly on many of these programs and you can expect to see useful Linux software for schools shortly.

 

On the administrative side, we've heard teachers say that if there isn't a good Linux gradebook program, Linux will never get onto teachers' desks. Period. Luckily, some of these teachers are also Linux fans and are working on programs that have the features they want rather than those that software companies think will sell. There's K12Admin, an account administration program written and currently in use at the Coast Mountain School District in British Columbia, Grader, a GNOME gradebook program being written by several teachers and students, KTeacher, a KDE gradebook being written by another teacher, and Roster, an account administration program written and used at Laney College. In addition, OpenClassroom, the Authenticated User Community (AUC), LearnLoop, and Zschool all intend to provide Web-based educational "environments" with integrated administrative and collaborative capabilities. Work is also beginning on a general testing and quizzing application that can be run by itself or integrated with some or all of the environments mentioned above.

Today sees the launch of the Cape Town Open Education Declaration which aims to make learning and teaching materials freely available online, to improve the quality of education in schools in South Africa and the rest of the world, leveraging the potential for open collaboration on the Web.

 

The declaration resulted from a meeting organised by the the Shuttleworth Foundation and the Open Society Institute in Cape Town last September and it already has some high-profile international signatories, including Ubuntu’s Mark Shuttleworth, Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia, Lawrence Lessig of Creative Commons and musician Peter Gabriel.

 

Although named after Cape Town, this declaration is part of a global initiative to encourage governments and publishers worldwide to make all of their publicly funded materials freely available online. That the declaration has already been translated into 15 languages so far is testament to its global reach.

For students , it may be a busy time for studying at the end of January. I was interesting in trying out some flash-cards for memorizing question and answer format material, but without using lots of small paper cards. It turns out there’s a great flash-card application in the Ubuntu repositories.

 

Mnemosyne does a lot more than traditional paper cards can. It decides which questions to show when using a zero to five grading system. How well you grade your answer determines if the question will be asked relentlessly or rarely.

What is SAGE Math? It's an open source effort to replace expensive commercial closed-source mathematics software with open source alternatives. William Stein, the Mathematics Professor at the University of Washington who started the SAGE Math project says:

 

"SAGE is a project at University of Washington whose goal is to create an optimal free open source software environment for research and experimentation in algebra, geometry, number theory, cryptography, and related areas. I started SAGE in 2005 by combining together the very best of existing free software (e.g., Singular, PARI, GAP, Macaulay2, Maxima, gfan, etc), creating interfaces to non-free software (e.g., MAGMA, Maple, Mathematica), and beginning to fill in the gaps with new code. Now dozens of developers have joined me in working on filling these gaps and making SAGE a polished and high quality piece of free software."

Thousands of Polish high school students now have a chance to learn about GNU/Linux and the benefits of using free software as Polish FLOSS foundation together with school headmasters, supported by local authorities organize a series of lectures on free software in education.
