Just bought a 3DS XL - Any game recommendations

I realise I'm kind of late to the party but i've just recently picked up a 3DS XL. I thought it would be handy for playing on my commute to work and I really wanted to catch up on the 3DS Fire Emblem games.

 

I bought Fire Emblem: Awakening and Zelda: Link between Worlds the other day and will probably get Super Mario 3D Land and maybe the new Metroid: Samus Returns in the near future. I like RPG's but I'm not a fan of anything that's overly linear or involves lots of repetitive mindless grinding for XP/loot! I'm tempted to try out one of the Pokemon games as I've never played one yet and I'm curious to see what all the fuss is about though I don't know if they'd actually appeal to me!

 

Any recommendations for other games which I should try on the system?

i really enjoyed ever oasis its a cute fun rpg its a bit linear but tbh that never bothered me

 

im less a fan of newer fire emblems fates i never managed to finish got to the last level on 1 of the 3 versions twice just cba with it the story isnt great and the cuts from the western version are jaring as tbh is the waifu crap thats pretty integral (i played as a female avatar and after a while some of the scenes were lets go with odd that way) i prefrered fire emblem echoes again got to last level made a hash gave up but i enjoyed it to that point.

 

if you are going to do a pokemon game and dont have any attachment to it for your own good dont start with the gen1/2 that are on virtual console (or will be soon with gen 2) just go straight to sun/moon then if you liked it go back and see here it stated but without nostalgia they are hard to play as tbh they have flaws that you just wouldn't accept if it was your first time with the game now

 

if you like visual novel type games ace attorney is fun the older ones are better and not played the latest there are i think free demo versions on the eshop

 

if you liked zelda a link to the past get a link between worlds (lttp is also on virtual console) its a similar game even basically the same map but its a different experience

 

outruns good for wasting 5 mins

I actually ran into an issue with the second hand 3DS XL i bought so I ended up returning it and getting one of the new 2DS XL units to replace it. Despite lacking the 3D screen it's a much more ergonomic handheld and is noticeably lighter than the 3DS. The 3D works OK but I ended up turning it off after 30 mins of using it so I don't think I'll miss the feature. I'd definitely recommend getting the 2DS XL over the 3DS XL for anyone considering buying one especially as it's only £130 vs £190 for the 3DS. It also includes a charger unlike the 3DS XL. In fact, even if they were the same price I'd actually rather have the 2DS XL just because I find it much more comfortable to hold. I guess that's maybe personal preference though.

 

What's with the price of second hand 3DS games though..... You'd think a 3-4 year game which retailed for ~£30 new could be picked up for next to nothing now but most of the second hand sellers on ebay and amazon still want near new prices for them! The Fire Emblem games seem particularly bad in that regard so I'm obviously not the only person after them. Still, I managed to find a cheap copy of Xenoblade Chronicles today as I wanted to give that a shot especially seeing as it's one of the few games designed for the 'new' 3DSXL.

yeah the 3d usually goes

gets new game flicks 3d on for ~1 min cool turns it off

 

games to some degree its nintendo and their online store they almost never reduce the prices of games theres the odd sale but even launch games are still full price on there so the 2nd hand market dosent get as cheap as other consoles

Pokémon Sun and Moon is worth every penny - had such a great time playing it.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is also a must have for this console.

Mario Party Star Rush - if you like minigames and such.

theres also ultra sun/moon coming out in november (iirc) but what it adds is unclear at the moment bar a few buildings where construction sites were in sun/moon

its worth remembering it can also play ds titles so theres a load of stuff there you can dip into

Yeah, will have to try and get super mario bros 2. The DS compatibility is a good point as well. In fact I still have my Nintendo DS lite and a few games for it. It'll be nice to revisit them on the newer system with slightly larger screens. Edited August 29, 2017 by flyinghaggis
