Our cutover migration move to O365 for Exchange 2010 is going well after a few tests, i think ive ironed out all the little niggles.

Anyway, distribution groups, those who are using O365, are your distribution groups sourced from AD or are the "in cloud" groups that you manage remotely?

Also, do you assign your external domain to these accounts or leave them with the onmicrosoft.com domain?

Currently on our OnPrem server we have a few internal distribution groups with the internal domain name so no one from external able to email these groups. I guess keep these groups with the onmicrosoft.com would stop this too?

Ive seen there is an option in exchange admin > *specific distribution group* to only allow internal users use specific group but trying to change this option requires me to edit the attribute on the local AD. This attribute is already set but the option does change. For example, the all staff distribution group, i dont want this to have the external domain on this group and it will be hidden from students too so will the onmicrosoft.com be enough.

Having an onmicrosoft domain does not stop people from emailing it. It's a fully working domain name.

You do have an option on Distribution Groups to only allow internal users sending to it. Or if you want more flexible control you could create a Mail rule and create a whitelist/blacklist to allow/block external domains.

I ensure every account is the proper domain rather than onmicrosoft as I believe it looks more professional
