FN-GM Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Hello, I am looking at setting up PFSense at home. I am wanting something fanless. I am looking at the SG-2220 on their website. It looks quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thanks
ZeroHour Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 (edited) Its not pFSense but I bought one of these: https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-lite/ and I have to say its very nice. This: https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-routing/usg/ is basically the same thing but you need a virtual/cloud key controller for it I believe and you have to cli more of the advanced config stuff. I got mine from: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HXT8EKE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 NOTE: do not use it as a switch between ports (aka 1 going external and 2 internal same lan) as the bridging is software based so it reduces the speed. I just thought I would mention it as I had been considering making a pFSense box but really didnt want the hassle all the time tbh. Edited March 27, 2017 by ZeroHour 2
mrwoberts Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 (edited) Similar thoughts of setting up a pFSense box. Does this provide PPPoE so I can remove my Netgear modem and connect straight to my BT Openreach VDSL modem? [Wall socket] --- [bT VDSL Modem] --- [EdgeRouter] --- [switch] ??? Current setup... [Wall socket] --- [bT VDSL Modem] --- [Netgear WNR2200] --- [switch] Edited March 27, 2017 by mrwoberts

caffrey Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I run a USG at home, it's quite limited and basic but covers my needs (Port Forwards, basic firewall) It does some nice Traffic stats too with L7. Try looking at the ALIX stuff for PFSense maybe ? PC Engines apu2c2 product file

You can setup incoming VPN as well with pptp using the web GUI or l2/IPsec via the cli. PC Engines apu2c2 product file Yeah they are very similar but you can configure more through the web GUI I believe with the edge router which is why I went with it although can can do nearly all the same things with cli I believe. Edge router does have deep packet as well but it's not quite as pretty as the unify controller version but I believe they are looking at letting the edge report that to unify soon as well.
