Printer Deployment

Hi all,

 

Looking for a way to speed up our logins.. the slowest part at the moment is Group Policy printers. I'm assuming this is because the machine is downloading the driver. Wondering what people are using to deploy printers, do you deploy the drivers as part of your image?

 

We use group policy printers as we like the preference item level targeting options. We did have a delete all preference as we saw issues with roaming profiles under Windows 7. Now that we are going local profiles on Windows 10 what does everyone think is the best way forward?

We use GPP but delete printers only when needed. So rather than delete all then apply printers. We use two rules for each printer, so:

MFD Follow Me - Just Install

Admin Inkjet - Install for Admins

Admin Inkjet - Remove for non-admins

Headteacher - Install for Head

Headteacher - Remove for none-head

 

This means your rarely removing or installing printers speeding up your login times.

When testing recently if I didn't include the following GPO in addition to the Printers policy it was very slow.

 

Allow non-administrators to install drivers for these device setup classes

I have this implemented anyway so non admin users can add additional printers if they want to.

We just have all the shared printers on a server and a shortcut to that server.

 

Before taking the workstation image we connect to all the printers on the server and it copies the drivers for the future.

 

Then once the machines are images, the user logs on and double clicks on the printer they want to connect for the first time. No driver downloads needed The printer then stays attached to that local profile.
