Windows 10 Default Apps list

Since September 16 when we deployed windows 10 i thought the default app associations xml was been applied. It turns out it hasn't.

 

We have enabled Windows Photo Viewer via a reg import from the net and it works when logged on as domain admin instead of using Photos. When we export the default app associations via powershell running DISM after we've applied the reg entry we can see the outputted xml is showing however when we try to import this onto a new machine, nothing changes. Even through GP, nothing changes. The application defaults remain the same and they dont change to windows photo viewer.

 

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with the defaultappassociations xml file.

I may be wrong but I believe the default app associations xml file only works if you're using Enterprise (and Education) only. Are you using either - and have you applied it in Computer Configuration --> Windows Components --> File Explorer --> Set a default associations configuration file part of the GPO?

 

Here's a copy of mine. However, I have not set an association for jpeg, jpg etc as the Windows Photo Viewer took association automatically.

Thanks. Pritty much looks like ours but ours is a lot smaller.

 

We are running a mix of ltsb2015 and ltsb2016. The defaults dont load in correctly for some reason so we are having to set each file extension in user config > preferences > Control Panel > Folder Options.

 

Trying to get photoviewer to open as default is nigh on impossible. It either comes up with the open with box or says this app cannot be run on your pc... even though if we right click on the image > open with > windows photo viewer the dam thing opens in photo viewer.

I don't apply any REG, VB or BAT files to my base image - only software that have site licenses and any that are cumbersome to deploy as MSI and/or EXE.

 

But yes, it gets deployed/imported every time a workstation boots up along with any other REG files I may have.

Sounds like youve got better equipment than us. We still have dell 755s that are 7 years old due to us getting very little budget to upgrade equipment .

 

If we had the equipment and decent hardware then we would use the photo app.

I used a similar reg file to re-enable Windows photoviewer which seems to work without re-importing every time - possibly because I removed the win 10 photos app from my build, so there's nothing else for Windows to choose as a photo viewer.

 

Maybe I lucked out - the only reason I don't have the photos app is that I removed it by accident from my original build, along with store (which was deliberate, but an error in hindsight!) so I can't put it back. Maybe it was a good decision after all [emoji57]

Ours defaults to GIMP for PNG and Fireworks for JPG. Even though when installing these pieces of software it doesnt ask you to make the application the default program, it just does it
