Video Broadcast

Hi everyone, this ones a bit different.

 

The school has an audio announcement system, it's a simple set up, microphone connected to an amp, then from the amp, speakers are daisy chained to the classrooms. It's a small setup, 7 classrooms. The audio system works perfectly. What we thought we could do, is using a old IP camera, is connect the teachers PC's to the camera feed on the whiteboard whilst the audio is being broadcast, giving us live video and audio. Students could do live news broadcasts etc.

 

We have the teacher PC's connect to a Dlink DCS 3010. We have been using a vlc shortcut to open an rtsp stream from the camera. Works fine with one connection, but when a few more connect the image becomes unstable and jittery. With 5 users connected the feed seems to freeze. I'm assuming the camera's hardware isn't up the job of handling more than a few users connected. Network is gigabit but camera is only 10/100.

 

So, what i thought, is there a way of having one connection open to the camera feed on the server, and then the clients connect to VLC player or some other software on the server and get the stream from there instead of all connecting to the camera? Anyone done anything like this before?

I would look at setting up Multicasting on your switches if it is capable of if? That would sort out the issue.

Wouldn't really know where to go with that! I'm not on site right now, they are netgear gigabit switches but not sure if managed or not.
