caffrey Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I've been playing with a Synology RS815+ and I'm a tad disappointed with the transfer speeds. I'm getting transfer speeds of about 37KB/s (!) I know the network is fine and I know the cable is fine, I've tried a few things e.g. SMB3 but no difference It's running 4x3Tb WD reds that have passed SMART configured with SHR with one disk redundancy, Synology NIC is running at 1000 Mbps Full Duplex and it's on the latest firmware (DSM 6.0-7321 Update 7) Any tips before I send it back ?
mrwoberts Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 It's definitely worth contacting Synology Support, and looking at their knowledge base, although if this is new I'd agree that you shouldn't have to do these things. I'm very happy with my Synology boxes so I wouldn't want you to give up on them. https://www.synology.com/en-global/company/contact_us 1. How about setting your box on a static IP, then remove it from the network and connect directly to your laptop (also on a static IP, matching subnet of RS815+). Try each NIC. Browse the shares and transfer files to see if that makes a difference, which would truly rule-out your switches/network... 2. Even though the firmware is up to date, is it worth resetting the config to factory defaults and if necessary, reconfigure the disks... Hope you find a solution
caffrey Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Thanks, I can't do anything physical til Tuesday, it was running slow yesterday but I thought that was because it was checking parity - I've been doing checks at home over VPN with the same slowness. I've contacted Synology but it says it can take up to five days for a response...
mrwoberts Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Let's hope they get back to you a bit quicker than that - I wonder if they've taken into consideration the bank holiday weekend? Did you change any network related options such as, LargeMTU, and how does this box appear in DNS, everything look normal? Another test, in the DSM, open the internal File Manager app and copy a large file from one folder to another - do you get the same snail transfer speed? If not then it kind of seems to be network related... 1
caffrey Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 I've tried various things and the speed stays the same 37-39KB/s tried rebooting etc (SMB2 / 3). MTU is set at 1500 (default) It's really strange. I can't test with any large files as it'll take hours to actually get one on there! I'll just have to leave it till Tuesday and swap / test the network - I honestly thought this wasn't going to be as much work!
mrwoberts Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Understood. If that file takes 25 minutes, maybe test it with that file. Copy it over, using explorer, wait the time it takes, then go through the File Manager test, as above. There is also a ssh file copy you could try. As you say, this might be best left til Tuesday. SMB version best left on SMB2 unless your network is predominantly Windows 8/10 All the best.
caffrey Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Played around a bit more, FTPing to the Synology is fine, managed to upload a large file, took the opportunity to do internal copy and that was fine too
mrwoberts Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Sounds like it may well be the internal NIC cards of this unit, unless you spot a network misconfig somewhere along the line. If you do need to replace the unit, I'd be interested to see how Synology handle that, since I've never had to do it.
caffrey Posted May 31, 2016 Author Posted May 31, 2016 Came into school today, put cable into lan2, full speed ahoy - must be a hardware issue with lan1. I even used the same IP address and there is no difference in settings Thanks again
mrwoberts Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Glad you found the problem; you're definitely not going mad Keep us posted on the final solution - are you going to RMA the unit?
caffrey Posted June 9, 2016 Author Posted June 9, 2016 Got to say I'm pretty unimpressed with Synology support, hours or days between email replies asking me to test this and that - now I've a teamviewer(!) session booked but they can only do it between 8am and 10am because of time differences with Thailand (and not this week because of public holidays or something) ... Starting to think about returning it and going with my original white box plan Box is working fine though apart from that LAN1
bossman Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 I have 3 Synology RS3164xs units as part of our Hyper-V cluster of which 2 are in sync for failover and the other is for additional storage and they have been excellent really impressed with them so far
caffrey Posted June 9, 2016 Author Posted June 9, 2016 Hardware is fine, I'm going to use it as remote backup using Duplicati - experiments up to now have been good. Just as a first time purchaser and user of them first impressions of support has been average at best.
mrwoberts Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Thanks for the honesty Caffrey, something for me to bear in mind. I always think that the customer service, if you need them, is a major selling point of a company. There products are good, but interesting that they don't seem to put the same effort into after-sales care. Hope it works out for you. If you did return it, in one school I've reused an old RM server with NAS4Free. Still going strong and loads of great features. If you were building from fresh, possibly FreeNAS might be better - needs beefier hardware.
