Tys Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Hi all, Not a MIS/SIMS person so bear with me here. Is it possible in SIMS to create a class allocated to a period which isn't with a specific teacher? Ideally would like any SIMS user to be able to log on and take the register for this group which will be changing half-termly. Currently it isn't timetabled at all (blank on student timetables). We would like to be able to change the group half-termly and have it show on student timetables etc. Would be nice to show a teacher name but as they aren't on SIMS that probably isn't possible. The person taking the group doesn't have a SIMS login and likely won't ever; the register will be taken via another staff login (might not be the same staff every day either, will vary depending on who is available). Is this all possible? And does the group name need to adhere to a specific format or can we just type in whatever? It would be really helpful if someone could give us some rough steps to do all of this that I can pass on to our SIMS admin. Cheers guys.
bobsmith Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Silly question, why doesn't this staff member have a login?
Tys Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 Silly question, why doesn't this staff member have a login? They're being brought in just to take this class, they aren't employed by the school.
bobsmith Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 But you're gonna want them to appear on your single central record for safeguarding. Of course you might not have migrated your SCR to SIMS yet. You can also create a user account without making them an employee.
Tys Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 You can also create a user account without making them an employee. How is that done? And is it possible to limit their access to just taking that one register? How would we then go about creating the class?
bobsmith Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 You go into system manager and create a user directly. They wouldn't be restricted to one class, they would still have to go to take register then browse for the register they want to take. We have classes without teachers assigned, if you browse the registers without specifying the teacher you can see all including those without teachers assigned.
RootsSchImp Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Make sure you give the class a room in NovaT if you're sending it through without a teacher. SIMS doesn't like getting sent orphan classes with no teacher and no room.
Tys Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Does the class need to be created in SIMS or in Nova?
RootsSchImp Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Both - it has to exist in Nova to be assigned there, but all it is in Nova is a name, say D20. When you send it over to SIMS D20 has to exist as a room so that SIMS says 'sure D20 I know where that is'. It doesn't have to be an actual room of course, could be a bit of the playground, or a beanbag in a corridor, it just needs to be a beanbag with the same code in SIMS and Nova.
Tys Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Right, I think I'm half way there with understanding this. We need to set up the room in Nova, and then create the group in SIMS where we add students to it and then it shows up on their timetables and as a register. In SIMS we assign the class to the room. Or does that all need doing in Nova?
RootsSchImp Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Nearly. You need to create the room in Nova and SIMS (if it's not in already). Then you need to create a class in Nova, schedule it and add the room. Then after you've sent the timetable to sims you can assign students to the group via Focus| School| Academic Structure...
