BTEC Sport and PE Video Editing

We run BTEC sport and A Level PE at our place, as part of it, the students produce videos of themselves taking part in cycling, athletics, rowing, football, rugby etc outside school. These videos then form part of their coursework and are graded.

 

The videos are taken on various devices from GoPro's, to traditional camcorders, sometimes smart phones. The PE teacher and the students then have to piece together the videos and edit them down using movie maker, or more often, Adobe Premiere.

 

The different file formats involved, huge file sizes and complexity of the software invariably leads to one of us techies being involved each step of the way. We then have to burn the final product to DVD ready to be sent away to be marked or moderated.

 

How do other schools handle this? It takes up pretty much a fortnight of our technician time each year. How do other schools without the luxury of a competent technician handle these courses?

 

Is our PE teacher going way above what is expected?

We have a dedicated PE Technician who we have trained on the use of video editing software, together with a very fast i7 stand alone laptop (1TB SSD) plus wide angled video camera which has an WMV output file with USB3 2TB External storage drives he gathers the videos and edits them and eventually burns them to DVD for the students.

 

The Students use the camera to take short videos but some use IPads and other devices but all in all the PE technician converts these to WMV format before editing and burning.

 

Its been working well for the past 3 years and it means large files are not being loaded onto the network so not taking up huge amounts of bandwith and space also.

 

Don't know how well this would work for you with A level students as we don't have a sixth form here.

blimey, it really an expensive course to run then. I wonder how smaller schools without these kind of resources do it.
