Migrating to office 365 from Exchange 2010

Hi all.

 

During the summer we will be moving from office 2010 (site wide) and running exchange 2010 on site to Office 365. Now with time running short and also have time off in the holidays we are starting to plan what we need to do.

 

So how did you move your staff and emails over to Office 365?

Have tried Hybrid for past week or so but we want to get rid of on-Prem altogether. The issue with that is we have used AD sync and that's now become the source of authority. However after a lengthy call with MS support today if we disable it and the users are removed it will be ok.

 

Another caveat to look out for is the 2000 mailbox limit if wanting to do a cutover migration. Exchange 2010 cannot do a staged cutover apparently but we have over 3000 mailboxes so to get around it we'll have to hide at least 1000 mailboxes from the GAL, do a batch migration and then unhide and do another until everyone is over. According to MS support anyway.......

Hybrid configuration keeping 1 on-prem server (VM) with bugger all specs purely for management purposes.

Did it all in live term time too with 0 downtime.

Migrated a total of 2800 mailboxes with ease.

The first thing you will need to do is stand up a new VM with Exchange 2013 or 2016 in order to achieve Hybrid.

 

Personally I strongly recommend you go hybrid for management purposes from on-prem and automation.

You can but it's 2010 and there is now 2016.

 

Personally i recommend bringing up a Win 2012 R2 VM with an Exchange 2016 install of just CAS and management roles and bringing it into your environment, setup and re-point all your services to that and then setup Hybrid configuration.

The process would then be to migrate all mailboxes, delete on-prem mailbox servers (leaving just the new CAS), apply for a free Exchange Hybrid license for your on-prem server and get rid of all your Exchange MS licensing

 

There's a lot more technical to it but can always help if needed.
