Andrew_C Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I've spent the last week or so fiddling with telescopes to watch this. (yes, safely!) It is almost guaranteed to be cloudy...
6Foot2 Posted May 7, 2016 Author Posted May 7, 2016 ...It is almost guaranteed to be cloudy... That would normally be my expectation, but the forecast is looking good for our area anyway. ...fiddling with telescopes to watch this. (yes, safely!)... Obligatory safety warning: Do not look directly at the Sun. Do not look at the Sun through a telescope, binoculars, etc. If you have a filter which is suitable for observing the Sun directly [NOT polarising filters, sunglasses, camera filters, sweet wrappers etc] it should be clear of faults, scratches, or pinholes. Check it before use. If you have any doubts do not use it.
6Foot2 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 All tooled up:- but nothing to see! There isn't much more success at this live stream here: Live stream of the May 9, 2016, Transit of Mercury. This is our first attempt at a live stream using amateur equipment, we are experimenting, so there might be interruptions.
6Foot2 Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 Around 13 times per century, Mercury passes between Earth and the sun in a rare astronomical event known as a planetary transit. The 2016 Mercury transit occurred on May 9, between roughly 7:12 a.m. and 2:42 p.m. EDT. The images in this video are from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO.
