DVD playback

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but wasn't sure if it counted as licensing or AV..

 

We are having a discussion regarding DVD playback via VLC..

 

As far as I was aware, DVD playback is subject to copyright and so using VLC isn't an option as the codecs used to do so were a little shady?

 

Having read this: If VLC can ship a free DVD player, why can't Microsoft? | ZDNet it would suggest that I am wrong - but, this was from 2012..

 

Do people know if Universities / Education in general can play DVDs on VLC or are we required to purchase software that comes with the correctly licensed codecs?
