A New Browser for the Web’s Most Demanding Users

After more than one year in public development and millions of downloads, Vivaldi today released the first major release of its pioneering desktop browser: Vivaldi 1.0. While other browsers strip down their offerings, Vivaldi adds features and powerful personalization options to help the web’s most demanding users increase their productivity and efficiency. You can download it free from https://vivaldi.com

Vivaldi is produced with love by a founding team of browser pioneers, including Jon von Tetzchner, who co-founded and led Opera Software. Here’s a look at a few features that make Vivaldi the ultimate web power tool for those who need it most.

Tab Stacks

Feel like you have too many tabs open? Vivaldi solves that with tab stacks. Drop tabs on top of each other to create a stack. It’s the fastest way to reduce clutter and keep organized. And when you’re ready to switch between tabs, Vivaldi has a number of customizations for that too.

Tab Stack Tiling

Have a big screen? Tile that tab stack and see multiple pages at the same time! With multiple tab stacks, it is like having multiple desktops!

Sessions

Take browser management to the next level. Save your favourite set of tabs as a session for later retrieval.

Notes

The perfect tool for researchers. Mark that quote and save it as a note. Vivaldi can remember which site you were browsing at the time, and allow you to take screenshots as well.

Quick commands

Access open tabs, bookmarks, history, settings and more through a command interface.

Mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts

If you really want to operate the browser at lightning speed. Mouse gestures turn a flick of the wrist into almost any action in the browser. Keyboard shortcuts do the same with simple key combinations.

Speed Dial

Your favourite sites and bookmarks easily accessible from any blank tab. Include Groups and Folders for even more Speed Dials!

Better bookmarks

Access your bookmarks from the bookmarks panel, bookmarks manager, bookmark bar and of course Speed Dial.

Web Panels

View websites in your Vivaldi sidebar. The perfect way to browse tweets, Facebook posts, or chat alongside your primary browsing window. We like to say it’s the next best thing to a “Boss button” for the web.

Personalized

Vivaldi adapts to you, not the other way around. We made Vivaldi the most customizable browser, all based on feedback from millions of users. In fact, there are more than 1 million different ways to make Vivaldi your perfect browser.

And of course there’s more

Plenty more features to discover to ensure you stay productive and effective on the web. Plus, Vivaldi supports Chrome add-ons, although hopefully you won’t need too many with so many features available out of the box.

Vivaldi is a web browser built for – and with – the web. The UI uses React and JavaScript, as well as Node.js. The core of the browser uses Chromium, ensuring pages render quickly and accurately.

I've been using Vivaldi off and on for about a year now. It's OK but it doesn't seem to do much different from Opera. I've been using Opera since it was released, when it used to display ads which you could turn off by paying - which I did. Vivaldi seems to have all the featuring of Opera that I don't like (speed dial and annoying wallpapers amongst others) and doesn't seem to have any advantages. Since I've been using Opera for so long, and I have carefully carried my profile with me (it was created in version 8.1 and I have version 32 installed), most of the annoying features aren't there on my Opera. I did try my Opera profile with Vivaldi, but I couldn't get it to work.

Do try it for yourself, but it to me it doesn't seem to have any advantage over Chrome or Opera.

This looks pretty cool...

Vivaldi browser v1.8 released, with calendar-style browsing history

Many of us rely on our browsing history to find visited websites. Yet, in most browsers, history is quite limited in its approach. You’d get a long list of pages visited and you’d need to search and scroll through hundreds of lines to find what you’re looking for.

There is a reason for that – as a rule, browsers don’t really want you to use history. They want you to search and find things multiple times because search royalties are part of their business model.

We’re thinking differently and giving you an entirely new approach to history – a detailed overview backed by statistics and presented in a fresh, visual way.

I've played with Vivaldi, and Brave a bit, but end up sticking with Firefox and Chrome.

They sort of seem to be adding solutions to problems which don't exist, I don't think I've ever had the need to track through my history, but then ff is set to delete temp files etc on exit anyway, may as well just google, although I can't get out of the habit of bookmarking sites, since that used to be a sensible thing to do, when you didn't want to waste valuable time searching, especially on dial up :)
