The observations were made by Gerrit Kernbauer, an amateur astronomer in Mödling, Austria.

I misread the thread title as 'caused by amateur astronomers' and was left wondering how powerful their telescope was. :D

 

That would be VERY powerful as the resulting explosion was similar in size/scale to the Earth.
