Delete users from Moodle - Keep feedback

We've hit a problem here were we have created a new AD account and found that it has synced to an old "deleted" account in Moodle. The reason being is that it has the same username. I have been told that we need to keep the accounts in Moodle because we need to keep their comments/feedback on assignments etc for each student user.

 

Now I don't use Moodle so I don't really understand the problem but I have been told that even if an account is deleted, if a new account has the same username it will result in a revival of the old account rather than create a new one.

 

Basically all we need to do is be able to delete a "teacher" account but leave feedback etc on the students records. And if a new account is created with the same username as a deleted account, create a new account in Moodle. I would have assumed this was the default settings but am being told it's not possible.

 

I'm wondering if they are deactivating users and not deleting them in which case it would require a change in the email address as per the information here. Most of the things I find when I did a quick search seem to be old though so I'm not sure how relevant it is any more.

 

Can anyone clarify how you should delete old accounts correctly (and what impact it has on live modules) as I'm not sure I'm being given all the correct information and I need to get up to speed before trying to work out a resolution. Or ideally point me to the correct resources on-line so I can pass it on.

One thing you could try is change the account type from LDAP (I'm assuming this is the case, or NTLM or similar) in Moodle to 'Manual Account' and then rename the username to have a "-OLD" suffix or similar. The old account will remain and the new account will be a new entity.
