Replicate Hyper V - No Kerberos (someone will have a simple answer :))

Hi All

 

New to replicating VM's so not too steady with it.

 

Trying to replicate our DC VIA hyper V replication to an old server running hyper V. I'm purely doing this for redundancy by not sure if my current setup will allow it.

 

Neither my main host or my old server which will be my replication host are part of our AD. They are just bare machines running hyper-v. This means when I try to connect the replication through Hyper-V I am getting a Kerboros error message.

 

Is my setup all wrong? Should my hosts be part of the AD? Bearing in mind our DC is a VM? If not how am I meant to connect the too machines without kerboros.

 

Mega confused at the minute.

You can use the host in AD nowadays, if you're using 2012 on DCs there's no issue with a fully virtualised network nowadays.

 

However you could use certificate based replication if you wanted, using SSL certs as the protection.

Do I add the hosts to AD in the same way I add a normal domain computer? Anything I should be aware of? Any dangers in doing so?

 

Also If I went down the certificate route could I easily make my own one?

In terms of adding the HOSTs yep join as a normal machine "however" if you haven't already got it setup I'd be vary careful with adding them, and double checking what's applying to the machines by default.

 

e.g. Make sure it's a OU without GPOs applying, or lockdowns etc At one of my old places someone decided to add a HOST to a domain and got it shutdown by our nightly script *claps*

 

In regards to the certs, you wouldn't be able to use self made ones as the 2 HOSTs don't know eachother so won't trust the certs/domain etc (It's not like it's an internal domain/host)

Made me chuckle. That's what I am worried about really. Will just have to make sure nothing applies like you said. Will let you all know how it goes. May well save it for a weekend/holiday job though. Give me some breathing space.
