Netgear - S3300

Afternoon All,

 

Still playing around with ideas (budget restrictions) for replacing/upgrading part of our network and found these:

 

Netgear S3300 48 Port PoE Stackable Smart Switch with 10 Gigabit (GS752TXP-100NE) - www.misco.co.uk

 

For a tad over £1.1k for a 48 POE with built-in 10Gb (CAT6 wise) it seems very cheap compared to alternatives.

 

Certainly wouldn't "personally" pick netgear for a core switch but anyone had any experience of these as edges?

 

Just wondering if a mix-match solution might work ok as if you're using the CAT6 there wouldn't be any problems with transceivers etc

I have a full site of Netgear M5300 switches on the edge and an M7100 at the core. I made the tentative move from HP due to cost and haven't looked back since. I've not used that particular series from them, though it looks like a lower spec version of the same thing.

 

The only things that I'll say about netgear switches is that you need to be careful, as the CLI language is very different to the likes of HP and Cisco and the GUI uses different terminology. Also, some of their low end edge switches can be very slow to use. I have 4 NETGEAR ProSafe® GS110TPv2 switches like this. Whilst it doesn't affect their performance, but is very frustrating trying to configure them.

 

I don't know if your suppliers will do this, but I'd ask for a test unit or a demo, so that you can see what tthey're like before leaping.

 

As far as transceivers go, you should be fine as long as you use the right settings for switch on the other end of the run. I had several HP Procurve 2900 switches on the end of mine with no troubles at all.

Hi we have about 40 of the GS752TXS switches as our edge switches with an M6100 chassis as our core. Underneath this we have two M7100 that run all the servers in our main data centre

 

Started swapping out our old GS724TP PoE switches for the PoE version you mentioned and adding them into the existing stacks.

 

Oh and we have three of their ReadyData SANs - hyper-v live and standby cluster shared volume and the other as our backup drive for Microsoft DPM
