Meru Bandwidth for Guest users

We have a Meru wireless network, with 3 security profiles. One uses Radius for our school owned devices that live in AD, one uses WPA for things like iPads and one is a 'guest network' using captive portal login with Radius authentication for our students to use. Each of these has its own VLAN.

 

As more and more students are connecting with their own devices on the guest network, we're noticing that network connectivity on all devices whatever they're connecting to is slowing down.

 

Can anyone offer advice about monitoring the Meru traffic? Firstly I'd like to confirm that it is the sheer number of devices that's causing the problem, and secondly can we limit the bandwidth available to student devices, or prioritise the bandwidth somehow without having to buy extra modules/software?

You can limit bandwidth per SSID....

What firmware are you running, which AP type, whats the bwidth into the school, how many students in the school, how many Aps... this will give me a decent view on what might be happening

Much better if you can limit by "application - like YouTube"- or "class of application - like streaming media" - but Meru does not have any layer 7 application detection to allow it to do this. Not sure about Ruckus - but Meraki does it well of course - and Aerohive. If you simply limit the bandwidth by SSID - it just gets annoying if your web access is limited.
