Desktop Redirection Problems - For a specific OU

Hello,

We have implemented folder redirection via Group Policy, but I'm having trouble managing it for different user groups.

 

We currently have all teaching staff using one centrally managed desktop.

However, we would like our admin staff to be able to manage their desktops. So I had the idea to use Group Policy on the Admin OU to redirect their desktop to their home folder (User Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > Desktop) Here's the settings:

Settings - "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location"

Target folder location - "Redirect to the following location"

Root path - \\Staff\StaffHome$\%username%

 

When I click 'Apply', I get the general Windows XP/2003 incompatible warning and it appears to take the settings. When I click 'OK' to close the dialogue box, and then open it again, it hasn't saved. It is reverting the settings back to the previous settings, which are: Target folder location is set to "Create a folder for each user under the root path", with the root path configured as "\\staff\staffhome$".

 

Even with the setting it reverts back to, I thought it should still have worked.It should point back to "\\staff\shaffhome$\UserA\Desktop". However it isn't creating a Desktop folder in UserA's home folder.

 

Can anybody please advise me on what I am doing wrong and how to fix it?

I've had this previously where the permissions on SYSVOL were incorrect so the users did not have write permissions.

 

As a test just try changing another settings and see if that saves

I'm not talking about their home folder I'm talking about the SYSVOL folder that stores all the GPO files.

 

If you don't have the correct permissions you can make a change but it just doesn't save the change

Ah OK, thanks. I am using my own account to make the changes, and I am a member of domain admins. Just to be sure, I've added the Domain Admins security group explicitly and given it full control over both Policies and Scripts in SYSVOL. The same issue is still occurring.

One way I've found to test the SYSVOL/GPO permissions is to perform a complete backup of your GPO's. This will usually tell you if something's wrong and give you a chance to fix it.

 

What happens if you create a new GPO? Can you save the settings there?
