Just an idea, do you think this will be possible.

 

A club to map a particular area for an IT/Geography crossover project. I got the idea after speaking to our Head of IT who mentioned she is doing Geography this year. The idea is to set up a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and use the GPS system on smartphones or some other device to tag areas of the school which can be assembled into a map. Smartphones would be ideal, they'd be free as they are crowd sourced, but they are also banned in school!

 

It'd be a project that

 

1) Teaches the practical use of GPS and tying them into information systems.

2) Give students ideas for how to apply IT in the world around them.

3) Make students aware of the privacy impact of smartphone GPS tagging. Most probably aren't aware their phone gives their location away!

 

Ideas?
