Alice Library Software Error Msg - "Invalid Machine Number"

Hello people. Today the Alice Library Software has been shafting me somewhat. Getting the error message in the title when starting it.

 

Dug out the following, which suggests for my issue running DBU.exe on OPERATOR.D: (if you even have an XP machine handy. Grrrr...)

...But DBU.exe is a baffling piece of carp and opening OPERATOR.D with it bears no logical relation to the instructions whatever.

 

So, just wondering if anyone had seen this before and had a quick fix.

I don't have a solution, but I've also seen this error for the first time today, on a Windows 7 PC that has previously been working fine with Alice.

Been in touch with support, will post resolution. Few things in mind.

Got this from their support. I didn't even know we were buying that until this morning! Hehe! They were quick to reply. Seems a bit 'hack and slash' but meh, worked:

The Invalid machine number issue comes about when one or more workstations are not correctly set up. Each workstation needs to allow full access to the C:\Program Files\AFW folder (or C:\WINDOWS\AfW if on an older version)

If the access rights are not correct to the AfW folder, you will get prompted every time you log in to Alice for a machine name.

 

Once this is done, you can sort out the error in Alice by:

. Map a drive letter to where the \OASIS folder sits

. Open a DOS prompt

. Type: X: (where X is the drive letter Alice is installed on)

. Type: CD\

. Type: CD OASIS

. Type: REN OPERATOR.D *.OLD

. Type: COPY .\STARTUP\OPERATOR.MAS *.D

. Type: EXIT

 

NOTE: Please note that any operators you have added into the Alice system other than the default options will be deleted as a consequence of the above action. This is unavoidable. You will have to re-add these operators in again through System-Security-Operators.

 

To set a machine as the shutdown machine, please follow the steps below:

 

 

. Login to Alice

. Select System-Parameters-Library

. Select the Shutdown tab

. Click the edit button

. Put a tick in the box after "This is the shutdown machine"

. Click the Save button

. Double-click on System-Parameters-Shutdown (Do not worry that Shutdown is still red. It does not refresh until the option is used or you log out of the system)

. The shutdown window will open, the module will turn yellow

. Close the shutdown window. The System-Parameters-Shutdown module will now be green and when Alice is closed, it will come up with the "Waiting for Shutdown" message.

 

Half of that I knew, didn't know the 'solution' half though. If I could have edited that stupid OPERATOR.D file myself I'm SURE I could have got it all straight again. Anyway I set the permissions and redirection and variable as per those initial instructions linked too, so now gtg.
