I have a windows 7 VM that is used by a member of staff through RDS. Occasionally the staff member cant get access to the machine because the firewall service on the VM has stopped. I cant get access remotely either until I log into it as admin and start the firewall service.

Why would it randomly switch off the firewall service like that?

I had something similar the other day and it was to do with SQL Server at boot up making the firewall service time out.

The event viewer should hold some clues on when it stopped and you can see what else was lurking around the same time.

(and its not a pretty way forward but you could modify the service to automatically restart on failure)

I did the restart on failure but it still manages to stop.

Eventlog : Event ID : 7024

The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error This operation returned because the timeout period expired..

This was preceded by Event ID 6008

The previous system shutdown at 00:18:53 on ‎22/‎03/‎2015 was unexpected.
