Migrating Google Accounts from one google domain to the same google domain!

Strange question...

 

ourdomain.org is currently registered to Google by our old academy trust who also manages it for us. This has all our accounts provisioned using GADS and GAPS and a lot of users have work saved to their Google Drive accounts.

 

We are now going solo and want to take ownership of the domain so that we can own it ourselves. I've rung up our academy and the only way to do this apparently is for our old academy trust to "delete" the domain from there end which will free it up for us to re register it. This would mean lots of issues with having to reprovision accounts \ migrating google drive files etc.

 

Does this sound legit or are they being lazy and there's a better way to do it?

If they can sign it over to you it would be better because yhen you can create a subdomain of the original domain and transfer your files/accounts.

AFAIK you can't do inter-domain transfers unless one is a subdomain of another, the only way would be an IMAP transfer for email and a scripted download upload for files which would be a ball ache.

So it is possible for them to sign over the domain to us? They claim the issue is that because they have 20 or so domains under the same google umbrella that this isn't possible. I don't know enough about google to know if they are pulling a fast one as it's work their end or if they are telling the truth.

In this case it is likely that they setup one domain and that yours is a subdomain of that. If this is the situation they won't be able to release s subdomain to you and you'll nave to go for a manual export for files. mail should be easy enough. It's possible to do all of this in the API so it might be a good idea to get hold of a Google partner who has built tools to do this.
