Imperial College London - Computer System Support/Administrator - £34,270 to £42,380

This is a job in the High Energy Physics group at Imperial College London and, as such, it's a bit different from the jobs most people here are likely to do!

 

If you get this job then you would be involved in managing the computers used to process data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. There's a lot of it - the last time I looked, there was 3 Petabytes of storage in use by the group (it lives in a large number of 42U cabinets down in the basement of the Blackett Laboratory). Imperial's connection to the Internet is currently 40 Gigabit/s and a good chunk of this is used to take data from LHC and pull it into the computers at Imperial so it can be processed. We'll shortly upgrade to 100 Gigabit/s because LHC produces such a huge volume of data.
