I've looked at that post, and have removed the relevant section from web.config. However, I'm still seeing black crosses. The error message going to the css file is "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred." Nothing in the server event log.

Excellent! Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday, got a fair bit going on. So often it's just a little niggle in the code somewhere, usually an errant bracket or colon throws things out! Spent *ages* trying to fix something similar a while back on HAP to find I'd left an > in when taking out a section.
