Our smoothwall box uses NTLM authentication and thats working ok with most devices. We've now had some ipads forced on us, and I've used the apple configurator to create a profile to add the wireless and proxy settings to them. This generally seems to have worked but we're now seeing loads of problems with the smoothwal authentication, in that it will stop working and constantly ask for authentication. The authentication details are set in the profile to avoid this happening.

I know ipads are designed a) for home use, and b) for use at home only :) but I thought the profiles would sort this out.

Once they start playing up, the only thing that fixes it, is to remove the profile, then re-add it. Not ideal, and neither is setting up an unauthenticated proxy but I guess thats what apple expect. I'm just baffled as to why it seems to work, then stop working for no apparent reason.

We run all our iPads through our Smoothwall box if you ever need any help! :)

We have a transparent proxy setup and have an SSL Page on the transparent proxy so that staff and students have to login before they can access the internet, this also works well for BYOD schemes because you can still ensure users are filtered and they know they can be monitored by their user name.

Just make sure to add your Smoothwall box to DHCP as a router and off you go the iPads should pick up the SSL page automatically, contact Smoothwall if you're stuck they where very good in helping me create it and get it working!

Yup - added an unauthenticated but filtered proxy & port to the smooth wall and that works.

As usual, apple dictate how we setup everything else!
