Steps to remove or stop an old SQL install after migration to new SQL version.

Last week I completed a migration from SQL2008r2 to SQL2012 using the Capita migration tool. The info has the following to be completed after the migration.

 

When SQL 2008/2008 R2 is no longer needed and only if it is not used for any

other applications on your system, you are advised to disable the SQL Server

Service for SQL 2008/2008 R2 for a period of time to check that it is no longer

required and then to uninstall the Instance as this will speed up the host

machine

 

I have stopped the SQL server (2008r2) service but wondered what it means by uninstall the instance?

 

Do they mean uninstall SQL 2008r2? if so which of the many SQL 2008r2 files is used to uninstall, as 'uninstall programs' lists a few different items.

In Programs and Features simply remove the entry Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (64Bit).

I would recommend a backup just in case.
