We had it restricted in my last place, Head, Heads PA, Deputy Heads and we could also send emails about outages/issues. The bulletin was sent out once a week.

At my current place (large university in the USA) they send out alerts, a news publication once a week, and a bulletin every morning and a "good news" every afternoon which consists of a news story about the success of a ex/current student.

We have a distribution list which we keep up to date and this is uploaded every term to our intranet,

This has all details of the staff, which DL they are in so that they can send the e-mails to the required staff and no-one else, this cuts down on the All staff spam which used to get sent out with useless information or sensitive information attached or within with the message "I'm sorry if this does not apply to you" :(

Now they have to think a little before they send :)

We also have quotas on their mailboxes as they seem to want to save every little thing but now they have to do a little house keeping or else their mailbox fills up and they cannot send or receive any mail.

I did want to go to the cloud for e-mail but SLT flat refused saying we require full autonomy of the system (Meaning they want access to everyone's mail but I have to be the one who looks after it)

I could think of better things to do with my time :)

Our "mail_all" list is restricted, so that there are only a handful of (responsible) people who can send to it. These make very good filters, and not that many non-urgent mails get through them..

Our SMT stopped the internal eBay system (Staff flogging their goods and even services via ALLSTAFF that seemed to be getting more and more popular!)

The best is when someone sends out an email to ALLSTAFF then somebody wants to reply to the person that sent the message in private but ends up sending out the reply to ALLSTAFF :D

We now have a blanket ban on all staff emails for anything that isn't related to school matters e.g. medical or behavioral issues that could affect all staff. However we do have a slight issue that we are trying to work on, but it's all well and good telling all the staff that child XYZ is in isolation, and understand that teachers might need to know, but do all the support staff/technicians etc need to know too?

As for the general chit chat all staff emails such as "i'm running a half marathon/eating my bodyweight in chocolate for charity, all have to go into a staff only part of the intranet! Seems to be working so far...

We've set up multiple groups for that... so we have a 'mail_all', 'academic_staff' and a 'support_staff' mailing list. Again, only nominated individuals can post to these..
