Joanne Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 So I lost my car key at work last week. Chances are it is lying around in the school somewhere mysterious, but I may have dropped it in the car park (who knows!) ANYWAY, IF my car suddenly goes missing... would I be insured? I'm going to call the police station to see if they have been handed in, although if you found them in a car park, you'd hand them into the place the car park is for... but you never know! Par Cark.
jinnantonnixx Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) My friend used to work for insurance claims (fraud team) and they often sent keys away to a lab for the data to be recovered. These were high-end cars, mind you. If they showed that the key was used to operate the car, the insurance was invalidated. In any case, you'll probably find that keeping your keys safe is an integral clause in your policy. There are exceptions, such as house burglaries, but be careful - you could have some problems if the keys are used to take your car. In the meantime, get a friend to block you in. Joanne Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 It had a ford badge on it >.< I'm pretty sure it is in the school somewhere... just don't know where!
sted Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 It had a ford badge on it >.< I'm pretty sure it is in the school somewhere... just don't know where! dosent take much effort if someone finds it to wander round the car park pressing buttons till they find what cars lights flash so tbh its identifiable if its a site you go to more than once
pcstru Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Are you insured : possibly. You need to check the detail of your policy. You even may be covered for the loss of keys but whether it is worth claiming ...
Joanne Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 if they don't show up this week I think I'll call them and see where I stand.
pcstru Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 if they don't show up this week I think I'll call them and see where I stand. Be careful what you say. Even phoning to enquire about making a claim can affect your premiums. Reading the policy may be cheaper. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/sep/30/insurance-query-higher-premiums

Insurance: how a simple query could cost you a premium penalty | Money | The Observer ^^^ Very much this ^^^ +1 - my wife's premium went up because someone else was entirely at fault in hitting her rear bumper (going too fast with not enough braking distance/attention) with no-one hurt, no damage done and no claim made. We made the mistake of informing the insurer just in case anything came of it. Should not have done. As best I can tell, this essentially boils down to "your premium has gone up because you're not psychic".
pcstru Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 As best I can tell, this essentially boils down to "your premium has gone up because you're not psychic". Statistically, you are more likely to make a claim in the future if you have enquired about making a claim. I don't doubt the truth of that, I just think it stinks!
