Dynamic DNS update

I know there are services like no-ip and DynDNS but is there anyway I can update a dynamic IP address myself to a FQDN or not?

What do you mean? There are services like https://www.bindhub.com/ that let you update your DNS records when the IP address changes.

 

You can't really have a dynamic IP for a Active Directory server. It's silly. Is that what your thinking?

lol sorry I guess I explained that better in my head.

 

We've got a FQDN (internet based) and I want to update our WAN IP (dynamic IP ADSL connection) to an A record of the FQDN. Ideally without using a 3rd party service that requires the use of one of their hostnames.

Have you checked with your registrar or DNS provider that they don't offer this service. A handful do.

Ah k, I think I know what you want. You basically need to update the DNS record but you want a custom domain name. two options - 1 is wait for the next release of Bindhub that lets you use your own domains. Other is mythic-beasts - https://www.mythic-beasts.com/ - be worth a chat with them.

 

I believe afraid.org offers it, but your have to pay $5 per month so others can't get subdomains on your domain name - they basically pimp your domain out for the free service.

We've got 123-reg. I already looked but I didn't see an option for DDNS. I guess I'll just have to update it manually.

I would look at moving ISP or paying for a static IP from your ISP tbh.

Also I would consider moving away from 123-reg for dns services to something like cloudflare.com which is free. 123-reg are a good domain registrar but I have had issues with their dns hosting in the past.

I'd love to but I doubt it's worth changing ISPs because of a site move in about a year. I also doubt my boss would pay for the static IP address for the same reason.

If look on nominet, do a WHOIS lookup, you have a registration (who you paid the money for the domain), then you have name servers - ie your dns provider. It's recommend you have these with two separate people, I'll try and dig out the article that explains why - the main reason it's to stop certain companies doing naughty things if you don't keep renewing your domain (and\or paying your bills on time).

I used two registrars, 123reg and namecheap. I'm moving most things over to the latter due to cost and the fact namecheap offer 2 factor auth. Just found out that namecheap also allow dynamic DNS updating if you use their DNS servers.

 

I generally use cloudflare for my DNS needs though, you can dynamically update DNS records on there too, but their api isn't compatible with my router - it requires a script - might look into this again one day.

I'm able to call the PHP file hosted on my web server using my router. The router doesn't like the reply it gets from the page, but it works all the same.
