Olympus camera problem

I just had a member of staff thrust a new camera at me and tell me her partner had looked at it and the battery won't hold its charge. He's tried everything. I turned the camera on, it asked to format the SD card, I clicked yes and it shutdown. I put the SD card in my computer, tried to format and it was write protected. Flicked the switch put the card in the camera and set the camera up. There was no indication on the camera that write protect was set and I only sorted it as quickly as I did because I stuck the card in my computer. I can see that catching a few people out!
