Liam Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 So I have treated myself to a new hp micro server. Taking advantage of the cashbook offer this Christmas. I'm wondering what you guys do with them at home. Thanks
jinnantonnixx Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) FreeNAS - storage and streaming, combined with Owncloud plugins for personal cloudy access. Perfect. FreeNAS For Home - FreeNAS Project Edited December 22, 2013 by jinnantonnixx
XiJ Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I ran freenas for a while and it was great. HD a bit of trouble with wol tho. Moved to a windows server for Plex and iTunes. Although never actually used the iTunes bit yet.
Liam Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 I have plex now. Awesome Where do you download
featured_spectre Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 With plex I copied my entire dvd inventory...took up around 3tb
XiJ Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) Copied with an ISO image? I tend to transcode mine to h264 mp4's. I'll maybe leave my favourites without compression / as mkv's though. Current library is approx 1tb - though i haven't done all the tv series I own on DVD. The iTunes server was for appleTV (I hope they have native apps or an Plex channel one day). Tbh I've never used the appleTV or the iTunes server bit. Anyone know of software that will create a 'Time Machine' server on Windows 7? Edited December 22, 2013 by XiJ
Trapper Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Run Server 2012 R2 Essentials - NAS with remote web access and media streaming. 5TB of used space!
abillybob Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Run just simple Windows 7 Home Premium on mine. Tonido runs in the background which I give all the family there own area and login, also includes remote access through any mobile device and a browser! I also use it to download the latest films and TV Shows through RSS Feed. It's also used as a DVBViewer host which it then streams live TV to all the networked computers in the house via XBMC and saves TV recordings onto it (we have 5 TV's) still looking for more to do with it though! Keep suggestions flowing
Liam Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 Keep these coming. I have esxi installed now only got 6gb at present with 1tb space across 4 discs. Maybe have to rethink that. I'm planning on going purely digital. Getting rid of my massive bluray / dvd collection I do want to install the vm version of sophos utm for home use too. Always good to see what folk get up to.. And obviously prevent any unwanted nasties from reaching my daughters devices. Anyone done anything with sophos
