Xendesktop 7.1 + atlantis diskless

our college is always looking for ways to be more efficient and reduce costs and we are now looking at VDI solutions. anyone got any hints or tips on this?

 

at the moment we are purchasing around 100 desktops per year which is a fair chunk of change. our thoughts are to do the following

 

use xendesktop 7.1 with the Atlantis ILIO diskless software to make it a diskless VDI solution and on the client side to use wyse c00le zero client as we require the best possible end user experience.

 

just with fag packet maths I would estimate we could save after the initial server purchase around 30 - 40% of our current desktop purchasing cost per year. we would not be using our old desktop estate as thin clients but replace the entire estate over a 4 year period with wyse zero clients which work out at around £250 per client as opposed to £500 per desktop. after the initial 4 year purchase savings should increase further due to the life span of the zero clients. we are also aware of the additional licenses needed (vda) due to the zero clients / non microsoft devices being used (tablets)

As well as the VDA licensing have you also factored in the cost of the Core CALS and the MS Office CALs needed as they are not covered through your normal EES or SA

not sure about the core cals but should be covered for office. we have additional licences for app-v for remote access via UAG /TS.MS were happo with our licences when we had our last meeting

Even having read and re-read the licensing documents over a long period of time, I'm still confused about this. We have VDA licenses for the Thin Clients but as for external access I'm still not clear. We have EES with FTE for staff so external access is, I think, OK for them but does this cover access by students? Don't know.

off the top of my head we needed to buy additional office licences for the number of potential pupils accessing remotley. for us we only allow 6th form so the licences are not for every pupil.

How are you licensing students for external access?
