Upgrade to hyper-v 2012 from 2008

Hi, I'm upgrading / migrating from hyper-v 2008 to 2012.

 

Has anyone got any experience they could share?

 

Any pitfalls I should look out for?

 

I've seen this TechNet Radio: IT Time – (Part 2) Upgrading from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012 webcast that says I can just copy the folders to the new server and import from there.

 

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

When I did the same I exported from the old server first and then imported into the new server running 2012, as suggested. So long as you have the virtual networks set up the same, you should be able to start them up without having to change anything as soon as they are imported. There were no gotchas in my case. As I recall, the only thing you will need to do after the import is upgrade the Hyper-V guest components on each virtual server.

We did this over the summer and it went smoothly. If you're running VMM 2012 you can just migrate although the machines have to be powered off and the network needs to be configured the same. When that's done, re-add or check the network, check storage and you're away. It does the storage migration as part of it.

Can you install VMM 2012 on the 2008 servers? is that what you mean?

Setup VMM 2012 on a separate box then you can use it to manage the new 2012 cluster as well as the old 2008R2 one. The VM's needs to be powered off but then you can literally drag and drop from one cluster to the other. Just realised you may not be talking 2008R2 so I'm not sure if that's supported in 2008

I am talking 2008 not 200R2 unfortunately, i'll look to see if that is supported though.
