Well, great. An upcoming distributed VPN system specially designed so it can't be centrally blocked at the network level. Sounds perfect for schools with BYOD.

Doesn't seem bad from an educational standpoint. According to the site it uses existing chat networks to initiate connections; which are already blocked by most. The fact that it is a browser plugin isn't bad either as this is blocked through policy for installed browsers, and portable browsers are blocked through the App Locker policy (students can only execute programs inside of the Windows directory and Program Files - two areas they don't have write access to).

Application policies are fine when you control the device. You usually don't when the device belongs to the pupil. And if blocking chat networks was all it took, this wouldn't be much use vs. repressive regimes so I very much doubt it will be that simple.

I wonder if the bods at Smoothwall would care to comment on whether they'll be able to deal with something like this?

One of the reasons our BYOD isn't cannot route to the internet. They connect and get to the Citrix login page and then connect to the system via a citrix session.

Sorry, I don't look at my mentions very often. As it's not released yet, our DPI engine doesn't have it listed. But they're publishing the source code under the Apache2 license, so I'm sure it'll get identified pretty quickly.
